Biography
Marimekko Oy, established in 1951, is a Finnish textile and clothing design company renowned for its original prints and colors. The company designs and manufactures high-quality clothing, interior decoration textiles, bags and other accessories. Marimekko’s textile designs are noted for their graphic quality and use of bright, bold colors. Their clothing is usually simply cut with clean lines. After the Brussels World Fair in 1958 Marimekko’s became known in the USA. Jacqueline Kennedy wore Marimekko’s dresses (designed by Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi) during her husbands’ 1960 campaign which increased Marimekko’s popularity. The company was at its height in the 1960s and 1970s, but reached the brink of bankruptcy in 1985 when founder Armi Ratia died and the family sold the business. Not until Kirsti Paakkanen acquired the company in 1991 did Marimekko regain its position as an important contemporary design firm. Since 2007 individually-owned Marimekko Concept Stores began opening in the United States and Canada.
