Biography
Dorothy Shaver was born in 1893 and moved to New York with her sister Elsie, an artist, in the 1920s. Dorothy sold her sister's fashion drawings to Lord & Taylor and was hired by the department store to head its Comparative Shopping Bureau. Shaver worked her way up the ranks at Lord & Taylor and became the first American woman to head a major department store when she was named President in 1945. Shaver helped establish the Fashion Group International in 1931 and Museum of Costume Art which became the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1944.
