Biography

Sydney Wragge, born Sydney Goldstein, was born on March 10, 1908 and attended college at New York University. “Early in his career, Mr. Wragge bought B. H. Wragge, a custom shirt house, adopted the company’s name as his own, turned it into a manufacturing company and added skirts to the line. He was a pioneer in the field of sportswear, credited with introducing the concept of modern separates. He was an early proponent of the sleeveless sheath dress, the jumper dress and the summer dress with slit sides. He retired in the early 1970s, with two Coty awards, the Neiman-Marcus Award, and a number of Sports Illustrated awards.” He was also one of the founding members of the Council of Fashion Designers of America and served as its first president.
