Biography
American fashion designer born in New York in the early 1900's, Charelle worked as an apprentice to Anna Sheer and in the early 1930's opened her own salon. Her clientele included Eleanor Roosevelt, Mrs. C. Ramsey, and Mrs. Fred Astaire. In time she became popular as a costume designer for both Broadway and Hollywood. In the mid-1950's Lord & Taylor offered to open a chain of stores bearing the Charelle name. She declined the offer and retired shortly thereafter.

Scope and Contents
This collection contains magazine clippings, patterns and fashion sketches in ink, watercolor, and colored markers. Clippings and sketches are of day and evening wear from the 1940's-1960's. Many of the clippings and sketches are of other designers' fashions. The patterns are for Charelle's designs and are from the 1950's. Correspondence and a photocopy of Charelle's label are included, as are photographs of wedding dresses and five sketches of evening wear, one of which bears the notation...
