Women's wear window displays, circa 1940s

 File — Box: 3, Folder: 2

Scope and Contents

Most of the dates of the display photographs in this folder are approximate, though some are dated via descriptions on the reverse (mainly 1940 - 1942). While the majority of the items on display are women's wear, there are some furniture pieces and textile yardage shown as part of particular displays. Many of photos are credited Worsinger Photo; other credits include Virginia Roehl and Louis Villela. A dozen or so prints show nature settings recreated in the windows (one of these is advertising Elizabeth Arden fragrance), and a few have New Yorker magazine covers as backdrops. Other fashions depicted includes sportswear, summer separates, daytime dresses, evening wear, Forstmann's coats, Furs by Frederica, Anthony Blotta, and Morris Kraue.

Three images specify Mary Brosnan 'manikins', shown in industrial production line type settings (reminiscent of Rosie the Riveter), with descriptions on the reverse of mannequin features and prices. There is also one label from Merchandise Display News (separated from its photograph) describing a window from March 6, 1940 featuring bird colors in clothes and accessories, including Harriet Hubbard Ayer's 'Pink Clover' toiletries.
