Museum of Modern Art, Organic Designs in Home Furnishings exhibition, 1941
Scope and Contents
This folder holds items pertaining to Harriet Meserole's inclusion in the Museum of Modern Art's Organic Design in Home Furnishings exhibition, curated by Elliot Noyes in 1941. The exhibition originated as a competition challenging designers to submit works that exemplified “...harmonious organization of the parts within the whole, according to structure, material, and purpose.” Winners were included in the exhibition and "...awarded contracts for manufacture and distribution with major department stores, with the first day of sales timed to coincide with the exhibition’s opening." One of Harriet's designs was purchased and printed by the wallpaper manufacturer Katzenbach and Warren.
Included are three silkscreens of her designs, a copy of the exhibition catalog, letters and a telegram about her inclusion in the exhibition, notes from Harriet about the materials, a clipping of a newspaper article, and a newspaper advertisement for the exhibition.
