Biographical / Historical
Salvatore Ferragamo is an Italian fashion house founded by shoemaker and designer Salvatore Ferragamo (1898-1960). Ferragamo was born in Bonito, Italy in 1898. Ferragamo emigrated to the U.S. in the early 1920s and set up shop in Hollywood, selling made-to-measure shoes to some of silent film's greatest stars, including Mary Pickford. In 1927, Ferragamo returned to Italy and formed his first company dedicated to the study, creation, and manufacturing of women's footwear in Florence. The first "Salvatore Ferragamo" store opened in Florence, Rome, and London in 1938. A decade later, the first U.S. store opened. In the 1960s and 1970s, Ferragamo branched out into leather goods, ready to wear fashions, and silk accessories.
