Biographical / Historical

Emme was a popular American hat designer of the 1950's and 1960's. Born Ethel Price, Emme graduated from college in New York, apprenticed as a millinery designer at Bruch-Weiss and then started her own millinery business five years later. She achieved her greatest fame when Adolfo designed for her from 1959 through the early 1960's. In 1959 they shared the Nieman-Marcus Design award. She popularized the halo brim and the draped turban. She was particularly known for her artful construction of fabric hats in puffed, shirred, pleated and gored designs. Such celebrities as Arlene Francis and Paulette Godard were her customers. In 1969, Don Kline, a Fashion Institute of Technology graduate began designing for Emme.
