Biographical / Historical

American designer for the popularly-priced Suzy Perette label from 1949-1963. Her clothes were known for their distinctly American style and absence of French influence. With no formal training and only a high school education, she apprenticed herself to a sportswear manufacturer at the age of 17. While designing clothes by day, she danced with the Denishawn Dancers at night. She later moved to the West coast, where she increased her knowledge of fabrics and took up painting. With partner Sidney Blauner she opened Suzy Perette, where her goal was taste and style at a reasonable price. She made up for her lower-priced materials with great attention to detail and personal supervision of the entire designing and manufacturing process. After she left Suzy Perette, she devoted her time to writing and painting.
