Joe Eula sketches
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of sketches by fashion illustrator Joe Eula from approximately 1960-1967. The first series contains fashion sketches for designers such as Cristobal Balenciaga, Pierre Cardin, Christian Dior, Jeanne Lanvin, and Nina Ricci. There are also a number of unidentified fashion sketches that are arranged by dresses, jackets and suits where all have been attributed to Joe Eula. The second series is comprised of portraits of notable personalities and fashion models as well as unidentified subjects. The third series are sketches of both sets and costumes from the Broadway production of "Sail Away" (1961). The last item is a correspondence letter relating to portraits that Eula created of 1960s rock musician, Monte Rock III and his manager Barbara Condos.

Fashion illustrator.
Joe Eula was born on Jan. 16, 1925 in Norwalk, Connecticut. After being discharged from the army in 1945, he attended the Arts Student League, and before long, his sketches appeared in Town and Country. Around this time, Eula also began designing for Saks Fifth Ave. In 1970, he became a creative director at Halston. When Halston and four other American designers left to show their collections in Paris (The Battle of Versaille), Eula joined along, creating the backdrops for the American set. In addition to fashion, Eula lent his talent to the other arts, designing album covers, posters, clothes, and even directing a T.V. special for Lauren Bacall. Joe Eula died in New York City in 2004 at the age of 79.
