Scope and Contents

This collection contains mainly newsprint clippings (most from papers local to Ft. Lauderdale, FL) and press about Hannah Troy-Meyers, relating to her career, and fashion retrospectives / benefit events showcasing her work and personal wardrobe of clothing; many of the articles are titled things such as "Ft. Lauderdale's 10 best-dressed women." There are also two invitation cards or programs for the events, correspondence with Max Meyer thanking him and his wife for their support, and clippings of articles written by Troy about men's wear and fashion in general. There is also one black and white photograph of Troy in 1954, receiving an award from the Italian Consul General to the US, which is annotated on the reverse, "1st American woman to be honored with the Star of Solidarity for creating great trade relations between our 2 great countries, USA and Italy."

Biographical / Historical

Born in New York, Hannah Troy worked as a model, sketcher and fashion designer before starting her own womenswear business. After determining that regardless of heighth, the average American woman was short-waisted, she introduced a line called "Troy Petites" that fit many women without alterations. Her petite sizing was later adopted as a standard in the fashion industry. In the early 1950's, Troy promoted Italian couture and fabrics., prompting the Italian government to honor her with many awards. Troy was married to Max Meyer the New York fashion industry leader, and they both served on the Board of Trustees of the Fashion Institute of Technology.
