Janet A. Sloane collection
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of files kept by American millinery stylist Janet A. Sloane (1913-1996). Sloane worked under Madcaps Inc. from the early 1940s to 1992, and most of the content lies within these publication dates. Series 1 covers French periodicals she collected, particularly the almost complete L'Histoire du Costume Feminin Francais fashion series whose contents span from 1837 to 1870. Of 10 albums, albums 6 (Extravagance precieuse sous Louis XIV 1715-1774) and album 9 (Sobres atours de la Restauration 1815-1852) are missing. Most of the items in the collection are related to promotional and press materials (registration forms, buyer's invitations to exhibitions, name tags, business name cards, program brochures, receipts of purchase, ticket stubs, design catalogues, original photographs and notes of daily work correspondence), or to fashion publicity (newspaper clippings). There are also a number of copies of designer sketches in the catalogues, and calendar tearsheets accompanied by hand-sketched maps and schedule notes. The majority of the content is related to women's clothing, but there is some information about accessories as well as interior design.
