Scope and Contents
The hat sketches in this folder are all rendered in gouache, ink and pencil; 3 larger sketches on gray heavyweight paper feature multiple hats on the page with handwritten notes describing the hats and giving style numbers. The remaining two sketches are slightly smaller format, watercolor and pencil on cream paper, and have handwritten captions on the reverse as follows:
"Designed by Esther Kelpper of Hattie Carnegie - 1945 -. Inspired by brown straw small hat - c.1860 - brown ribbon bow and cotton roses and buds - in Costume Institute collection 41.76.3"
"Designed by Esther Klepper of Hattie Carnegie - 1945 - Inspired by small flat hat of white velvet, draped ribbon in front 1867 - 68. 42.74.37 in Costume Institute collection."
The latter two sketches have been digitized and are available on SPARC Digital--see related materials note for details.
