Scope and Contents

This collection contains original fashion sketches done by Harra in the late 1940's, early 1950's. It contains photographs of her garments on models. Some of the photos have the original illustration attached. It also contains press clipping and pamphlets regarding Harra's business and events she participated in. Also included are pieces of correspondence and financial information, some on Harriette Harra letter head.

Harriette Harra was an American fashion designer. She worked for Stein and Blaine before starting her own wholesale design firm. After discontinuing her firm in 1951, she joined Ben J. Glam as a designer.

Arrangement

This collection is separated into 4 series. Series one contains fashion sketches. These sketches are done in pencil. Some are filled in with water color and has swatches attached. Some have annotations from the designer. Sketches are organized chronologically. Series two contains photographs of garments on models. Some of the photographs have press information attached, while others have their corresponding illustration attached. Series three contains press clippings and event announcements. Series four contains miscellaneous correspondence and financial information, including garment costs.

Custodial History

Harriette Harra was best known as a women's wear designer of the 1940's for the "modern woman". Besides designing ready-to-wear dresses, suits, resort wear and coats, Harra created evening wear fashions and costumes for Broadway shows such as "Present Laughter" and "Heads and Tails". She was part of the ready-to-wear department at Stein and Blaine in the late 1940's and also formed her own firm, Harriette Harra, Inc.
